Quality Policy

Introduction

The quality policy of the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme in “Medical Physics – Radiation Physics” (MSc-MRP) is harmonized with the quality policy of the University of Patras and aims at the implementation of quality objectives related to its operation and in particular to the organization and operation of the Postgraduate Studies Programme, the continuous improvement of the educational, research and administrative work, in order to adapt to modern academic and research conditions.

Vision and Mission of the MSc Medical Physics – Radiation Physics

The mission of MSc-MRP is to produce qualified scientists in the scientific field of Medical Radiation Physics who will be able to staff health care structures of the Public and Private Sector and to pursue research and innovation in their scientific field.

Purpose of the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme

MSc-MRP has as its purpose the training of graduates in the scientific field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics as well as the conduction of scientific research in the above field.

The aim of MSc-MRP is the creation of qualified scientists in the scientific field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics and in particular:

1.            The training of graduates of the Departments of Physics and Applied Physics in the scientific field of Medical Radiation Physics who will be able to obtain the professional license “Hospital Physicist – Medical Radiation Physicist”.

2.            The training of graduates of science or engineering orientation in the field of Medical Physics, so that they can contribute to the promotion of health and the development of research in the field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics.

3.            The development of research skills of postgraduate students to ensure both their specialisation and their contribution to the cultivation and development of scientific research in the field of Medical Physics – Radiation Physics

Objectives of MSc-MRP

The strategic objectives of MSc-MRP are linked to those of the Faculty of Medicine and the University of Patras and are the following:

  • To provide high quality postgraduate teaching and research in Medical Physics and Radiation Physics.
  • The preparation of graduates who will have the cognitive background for successful participation in scientific research in Greece and abroad for the production of new knowledge.
  • The preparation of graduates who will have the cognitive background to obtain a license to practice as a Hospital Physicist – Medical Radiation Physicist
  • The orientation to fully satisfy the needs of students through the provision of high-quality education.
  • The strengthening of the extroversion and internationalization activities of the University of Patras and the promotion of the work that the MSc-MRP offers to the international academic community and the wider society.
  • Transparency and compliance with the rules of the University of Patras operation by all members involved.
  • The operation of MSc-MRP based on national and internationally recognized quality standards.
  • The focus on excellence and innovation through the strengthening of synergies with educational institutions, organizations and public and private sector bodies in Greece and abroad.

Departmental commitment to the implementation of a quality policy for the Postgraduate Studies Programme

The Faculty of Medicine is committed to the implementation of a quality policy that supports the academic character and orientation of MSc-MRP, promotes its purpose and its strategic objectives, defines the means and ways of achieving the objectives and implements the indicated quality procedures, with the ultimate aim of continuous improvement. In particular, to implement this policy, the Faculty of Medicine is committed to implementing quality procedures that demonstrate:

  • The appropriateness of the structure and organization of MSc-MRP.
  • The quality of the support services.
  • The conduct of the annual review and internal audit of the quality assurance system of MSc-MRP.
  • The pursuit of learning outcomes and qualifications in accordance with the European and National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education and more specifically:

Knowledge:

  • of principles and methods applied in conducting research.
  • of basic medical sciences relating to the structure and function of the human body and the relevant scientific terminology.
  • of the principles and methods of statistical analysis of biomedical data obtained from each level of function of the human body (molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organism) and methods of management of biomedical information derived from the analysis of these data.
  • of the ways in which radiation interacts with matter and how these relate to medical imaging devices and with the principles of radiation protection.
  • of the specific duties of the Hospital Physicist – Medical Radiation Physicist when working in the departments of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy as provided for in relevant laws.
  • of the specific knowledge related to the Physics of Radiology, Physics of Nuclear Medicine and Physics of Radiotherapy.
  • of the basic principles and methods of processing and analysis of medical images.

Skills:

  • to be able to apply their knowledge of statistical analysis of biomedical data using appropriate software.
  • to be able to apply knowledge of the processing and analysis of medical images using appropriate software.
  • to be able to carry out quality control of medical imaging and radiotherapy devices.
  • to be able to prepare reports and studies as required by the job duties.
  • to be able to perform dosimetry and shielding calculations in the context of radiation protection.
  • to be able to solve problems encountered in the performance of his/her duties by a Hospital Physicist – Medical Radiation Physicist.

Competencies:

  • to be able to communicate effectively with other biomedical scientists in the context of interdisciplinary working and research teams.
  • to be able to transfer the knowledge and skills acquired to novel problems in the field of their tasks.
  • to be able to contribute to the acquisition of new knowledge by conducting research in a responsible manner
  • the suitability of teaching staff qualifications
  • the effective link between teaching and research.
  • the relevance of the qualifications acquired by graduates to the evolving labour market.
