Lena Costaridou was born in Aigio, Achaia. She received the Diploma in Physics (1979) from the University of Patras, Greece, the MSc degree in Medical Engineering (1982) from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Sciences, George Washington University, USA, and the PhD degree in Medical Physics (1997) from the School of Medicine, University of Patras, Greece. In 2000 she joined the Laboratory of Medical Physics as a Lecturer, and currently is Professor, since 2015.
Her research interests include medical image analysis methods, with emphasis to imaging biomarkers for disease diagnosis, in imaging modalities such as x-ray imaging, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, as well as optimization and quantification of image quality in medical imaging. She is author/co-author of 80 articles in international peer reviewed scientific journals, more than 80 full papers in International conference proceedings and 70 abstracts in books of abstracts of international conferences, with 12 of international conference presentations having achieved honors. Her scientific work is internationally recognized (h-index 20). She has participated as coordinator or research team member in 17 research and development projects, with university/national/international funding.
She is author/co-author of 6 invited chapters in international scientific editions, editor of “Medical Image Analysis Methods”, CRC Press, 2005, and member of the editorial advisory board of “Handbook of Research on Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Imaging and Biomedical Applications”, IDEA Group Inc. Global, 2008. She has been invited as reviewer or guest editor of numerous peer reviewed international journals and international scientific conferences (more than 30).
She has been member of the General Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Patras, Director of the Division of Basic Medical Science I (Academic 2017-19) of the Department of Medicine and member of several steering or interdepartmental committees of Postgraduate Programs of Studies of the University of Patras I. She currently is chair of the Interdepartmental Committee of the Postgraduate Program of Studies in Medical Radiation Physics of the University of Patras (since 2017).
